My Worst Nightmare

The night of Byron's return from Alaska was a busy one. Wyatt and I spent the day swimming at my mother's, and returned home in time for a nap and then to get ready for a wedding reception. Our friends, Ryan and Ginger, were awesome enough to call and let me know they were almost to the reception, so we wouldn't be alone. So, stressing because Wyatt ate none of his dinner, I gathered everything we needed and headed out the door. In my rush, I forgot my cell phone. Byron would be trying to call to let me know when he was almost home. At the reception, my mind focused on other things, especially when a sweet grandma fell out of the photo booth and hit Wyatt's hands as she came crashing down on the wedding presents. The music was loud, there were a lot of people, and now Wyatt was crying huge crocodile tears as his hands throbbed in pain. My saving grace was seeing Miranda's (Ryan and Ginger's daughter) face walking out of the bathroom nearby. She helped to calm Wyatt down and show me where her parents were. With a pouting lip and big tears still in his eyes, Wyatt willingly went to Ryan and clung on to him for most of the evening. I tensed for a moment to see Ryan take Wyatt straight to the ice cream bar, still envisioning his full, untouched dinner plate of meatballs and couscous sitting on our kitchen table. Ginger kindly reminded me to leave the kid alone, he just had a grandma fall of him. I calmed down.
Ryan offered to pick up Byron at the airport, so I decided to get home to see if Byron had called. Not to my surprise I saw that I had missed Byron's phone call, but he had left a voice mail. I pushed all the right numbers and waited calmly for the message to play. As the voice mail started playing, I could hear environmental noise from an airplane, and then the most frightening sound I had ever heard. A woman was screaming, what to me, sounded like out of complete fear. The scream continued for the longest 3 seconds of my life. I then heard Byron's voice start to speak, and then nothing. The message ended. My heart stopped, my hands shook, and tears filled my eyes, while panic filled my chest. "What was that?!! What was that scream?" I yelled as I paced my family room. I listened again, same scream, same panic. Again, I listened, I cried, I paced. Over and over, I listened to the messenger as sweet little Wyatt repeated, "Whas wong, Mama? Whas wong?" What do I say? "I think your daddy is on a hijacked plane?" I decide to call Byron's voicemail, forgetting that we switched phones and Byron might not know how to get my voicemail. I was bawling, begging for Byron to pick up the phone. "Why is there a woman screaming? Where are you? Why are you calling me when you should be on the plane?"
I was frantic. I tried to call my mom's house. No answer, I left a sobbing message asking her to call me. I called her cell. Why doesn't my mother ever keep her phone on? Then I was terrified to remember, my father was also on that plane. By this point, I've listened to that woman's scream at least 10 times. I've started to think the plane as been hijacked and Wyatt will not know his father or grandfather. Overreacting, perhaps, but you didn't hear that scream. I decide to call Ryan, I'm at the point where I have no idea what to do. I started crying, as Ryan assures me everything was fine.
"What airline is he on?"
I have no idea."
"Do you know what flight number it is?"
"Byron never told me. He's supposed to be home by 10:30."
I'm sure he's fine, Sommer."
Finally my mother calls me, staying calm, but wanting to know exactly what I heard on that message. She hangs up to listen to the rest of her messages to see if my father called. He did.

"Connie, Connie, Connie. She's not there." End of message.

What does that mean? My mother and grandmother decided to come over. While I wait, Ryan callsed with the airline and flight number that Byron should be on. I was able to find it on the Internet and I sat at the kitchen table staring at a little plane moving on the screen. My mom and grandmother join me ans we listen to the woman screaming again, and again. My grandmother calmly maked a phone call to the airport. "The plane as landed!" But was Byron and my dad on that flight? I called the cell phone again, and again. No answer. Time passes by like an eternity, until finally! Byron, completely unaware of the worst hour and a half of my life, called to tell me he's at the airport. Sobbing, I wail, "Where the hell of you been?" After a brief, yet strongly emotional conversation, I explain what I've been through, and Byron apologizes over and over again. He thought he had hung up before the phone started recorded, and he had no idea what that scream was. He wasn't even sitting near a woman.
We learned a lesson that night. We need to communicate more. I've always been so passive about Byron and his travels. People ask me where Byron is when he goes hunting. Haven't the foggiest idea! Why didn't I know the name of the airlines? The fight number? I know better now. Had I known more information about the flight, I would have known that Byron called one minute before the plan was scheduled to take off. Knowing about that one minute might have kept me rational and calm, not frantically jumping to conclusions. Most importantly, I was reminded how much I love my father and my husband. I did not want to live my life without my best friend. I wanted Wyatt to always know his father. I was so glad to see their faces.

Busy, Busy, Busy

My grandmother's 80th birthday party was this Friday. We chose an old 1940's theme and played swing music. The best part was dressing up with Victory Rolls in my hair, fishnet stockings, and red gloves. See the picture of the week!

Saturday, Wyatt and I didn't wake up until 10 AM, very very unusual for us, but sooooo needed. We spent the day swimming and relaxing at the pool, waiting for Byron to get back from his fishing trip to Alaska (That is a totally different story that requires its own post, coming soon.)

Strangers

How many people who don't know you look at your blog? I'm not bothered by friends of friends looking at my blog, but someone from Iowa just signed my map with an odd message. I find it rather disturbing. I'm not sure why it bothers me because there are a handful of blogs I look at of people I don't know. I guess I'd never let them know that I'm looking, an "ignorance is bliss" sort of thing. So sorry Tom from Bondurant, IA, but I think you're kind of creepy.

Whew!

OK, my blog list is back. I feel whole again.

What?????

What happened to my blog list? It has been gone since yesterday. Anyone else missing theirs?

Jon and Kate took their message off of their website. Interesting. Basically it said anything said about them was lies, even coming from family members, and they only thing they care about was the kids. See my last post of you have no idea what I'm talking about.

I must confess...

I'm such a slacker. Kirsten was right, I couldn't stay away. Somebody asked for that Jon and Kate website. Go to this site first and read what Jon and Kate wrote. http://www.sixgosselins.com/ Well, naturally, this got my attention, so during my 45 minutes of mind dumbing, time wasting I googled them and found this site: http://truthbreedshatred.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
If you are familiar with the show, then you know the sister-in-law Jodi. The red head who helps a lot, well this blog is authored by her sister. Read it and be amazed how quickly your life gets wasted away. If you are going to commit to it, then may I suggest starting at the May archives and working your way up.

On a totally unrelated subject, did you know that toilet cleaner is really good for cleaner other parts of your bathroom? Someone told me that, so I tried it and I was amazed how bright my downstairs shower got. My bathtub too. My master shower, not so much, because it is crap and was installed be morons before we moved in (Please no comments that I shouldn't call Byron or my dad "morons." They didn't install the shower.) Anyone want to donate to the "Sommer-needs-a-new-bathroom-but-decided-to-throw-away-her-career-to-reap-the-benefits-of-guiding-her-own-child-to-be-a-upstanding-member-of-society-and-so-her-income-is-no-longer-what-it-should-be" fund?

I need to go, gotta go bake a pineapple gooey butter cake, love that Paula Deen. Here's the recipe (my, I am full on links today) Gooey Butter Cake

I'm grounded...

I've only been grounded once in my entire life. My mother grounded me for a week for ditching Sunday School with almost the entire class. We crossed the street and went to my house (Kristin, do you remember this?). My mom walked in my bedroom and said, "You are all grounded!" Hilarious now as it was then, to ground children that don't belong to you. However, it is time to ground myself again, I'm grounded from my blog and other people's blogs. I just spent 45 minutes reading a stranger's blog about the evil ways of Jon and Kate Gosselin from TLC's "Jon and Kate Plus Eight." Why did I read this? It has nothing to do with me, and it wasted 45 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. I could have been scrapbooking, cleaning out one of the many disorganized drawers or closets in my house, or best of all, I could have been taking a NAP! So, I've decided to take a break from ALL blogs until Friday night. My grandmother's 80th birthday party is Friday, and I'm excited to show pictures. I'm only checking my email twice a day, or if I happen to be doing some work on the computer. I've got to show the computer who is boss.

In the meantime, enjoy our little family of puppets Wyatt and I made to entertain ourselves today. I'm sure you can figure out who is who!

Let's all breathe in...and out...

Whew, we are doing much better. Wyatt has slept through the night the past 2 nights, with little mouth pain and no screaming. The soars are still in his mouth, but he is healing. Now it is a matter of keeping Wyatt entertained since we can't responsibly go anywhere without taking the chance of infecting an innocent bystander with this foot and mouth disease. Though Wyatt getting this sick is something I never want to do again, we have had some fun in our quarantined home. We've been decorating cookies, making sand art, even building forts to watch "Go Diego Go!" inside while I convince Wyatt to eat anything soft and drink Pediasure shakes. He actually ate some dutch babies this morning, so we were thrilled. We've gotten lots of phone calls from concerned friends (Thanks!) and a visit from Gramma Jeri. She even got in the fort to read books!

It is miserable to see your son so sick and confused. But I'm counting my blessings. He is getting better, and during all this I get to spend some time just having fun with him. It has been nice to shut out the world for awhile. These are things that I am grateful for. So many other mothers have to deal with so much more, and they hold their heads up high. They somehow find peace and know that they are good moms. I hope I can feel that way someday. I think that the way I can get there is to stop complaining about the bad stuff that happens, and just take care of my family, enjoy them, and do my best. I hope the people that I love will recognize that.

Open Mouth, Insert Foot

So Wyatt has come down with foot and mouth disease. It sounds like something a cow should have, but he has it and it is making us all miserable. I value my sleep, and we go to bed early in our home. So here it is, a quarter to midnight, and Wyatt has been screaming for way over an hour now, and we have no way to help him. Just Tylenol and mouth numbing medicine which must sting because it makes him scream more. I am exhausted, frustrated, and feeling a little like panicking. He is restless and no bed, mine or his, is comfortable. It is times like this that Byron and I discover our different parenting styles. As mean as it may seem, I want to leave him in his crib, after giving him medicine and a few kind words, and allow him to "cry it out." Eventually he will tire himself and go to sleep. Byron wants him in the bed with us to try to console him. Neither method is working well, which just makes us more frustrated with each other. My neck is hurting from a pinched nerve which hurts even when I yawn (not helping my situation). I know there are much bigger problems in the world, and I'm complaining about losing a few hours sleep, but when you are sleep deprived, nothing else seems to matter. It is quiet down the hall. Maybe Byron's method worked after all. Just don't tell him that. Good night.

If it weren't for blogs...

OK, I know some people think that blogs are just another way to waste time, and yet, I have something to consider. If it weren't for blogs, the wife of an old friend wouldn't recognized me at the park (Hi Autumn). If it weren't for blogs, I wouldn't have accidentally located three old high school friends. If it weren't for blogs, our friends and family from Japan, West Jordan, Parhump, Oklahoma, and many more places wouldn't be able to take a peek into my oh so important life (That was a joke). If it weren't for blogs, I would have been asleep an hour ago, well, ok, that one wasn't good, but the first 3 were cool. I better get to bed!

AAAAARRRRRHHHHGGGGGG!

OK, I like my blog, but I wanted to tweek my title, and now I can't get the darn thing off! I'm stuck with the glittering Christoffersen title for life!

Thank you for your patience

Please excuse the inconvenience during our new construction! The new and improved blog is coming soon!

Wish me luck!

It is time for a change, so I'm changing my blog background. I'm terrified that I'll lose all my hard work. So if my blog blows up, I'll try to get it back after a tantrum or two!

Say Toast!

Wyatt has developed an interest after his father and likes to pretend to take pictures with his toy camera, or his Nini's camera, or a box that looks like a camera. Today he had his toy camera asking me to pose and yelling, "Ready? Say cheese!" But then he wanted to change it up. Not by moving me to a different pose or using another object as a camera. He just wanted to change his terminology when Wyatt started to ask me to "Say toast!" or "Say milk!" So cute it is obnoxious!

Happy Fourth of July

It was a great weekend in Parawon. We didn't do anything different than weekends in the past, but my grandmother came which made it really special. Nini (as we call her) has the most loudest infectious laugh, which gets my mom and I both going (as much as Byron despises!). Friday was the fourth of July. We headed to Main street for the annual parade. The main focus of the parade is to collect as much saltwater taffy as possible. Wyatt loved the parade. There was so much to see, the horses and the firetrucks were his favorite. After the parade, it is tradition to head to the Dairy Freeze for an ice cream cone. Wyatt experienced his first bounce house at the Fireman's 4th of July Celebration at the park. I kept running into people and old friends that I knew. Parawon seems to be Las Vegas locals' getaway. As if we didn't do enough, Mom and I took Wyatt to the city swimming pool to keep giving him experiences swimming so he would keep practicing. After a nap, we had a BBQ of steak, corn on the cob, baked beans, and red, white, and blue cookies. By law, we couldn't do fireworks at the house, so after searching forever for the lighter, we piled into the truck to head to the park to light our own fireworks, only to discover my parents mistakenly bought "poppers" (you pull the string and it goes "pop!") and not actual fireworks. So we piled back into the truck and rushed home so we could be in the backyard in time for the big fireworks set off by the local firemen. I think its one of the best shows around, and to be in our own yard, just us, makes it that much better. Wyatt began to get sleepy and he just wanted to cuddle. He'd cuddle with Pappa then move onto Grammy, then Nini, then Daddy, and eventually me. Wyatt is all about equal opportunity!

Saturday morning, Gramma Jeri was driving through town on her way to visit family near SLC, so Byron, Wyatt and I took her to breakfast at the Parawon cafe for pancakes and omelets. During the very long wait, we ran into more old friends. After we sent Jeri on her way we rushed to get ready for a long four wheeler ride with neighbors across the street. I felt terrible because we made the neighbor wait for us, when all of her family went on a head of us. But we caught up and traveled up to Red Creek Reservoir. It was about a 2 hour ride and it was a lot of fun. Wyatt fell asleep during the last 30 minutes. We wrapped him in a shirt and used his hat to cover his face. We were filthy by the end of the trip. My poor mom's face was gray with a line across her forehead where her hat sat.

The rest of the trip was a lot of just hanging out and eating way too much. Wyatt starts his 2nd session of swim lessons tomorrow and 3 duffel bags of laundry await me, not to mention some major exercising and dieting. Which I need to say, I've really got to work on. I seem to be addicted to food these days, which a few years back, is how I gained a bunch of weight before. So I'm a little freaked out. I'm not obese by any means, but I have got to stop snacking and eating ALL THE TIME, and exercise more. Not that I'm making any excuses, but it is so dang hot, that jogging with a jogging stroller and 2 dogs (one of which is becoming an old fart) is downright impossible. But, if I'm going to go, then we're ALL going to go, so I've been trying to make time to just speed walk longer and hopefully burn some more calories that way. OK, that's the end of that rant!

Have a great week!

We're Back!

Well, don't get me wrong, we had a great trip, but I don't think we could have packed anything more in three days than what we did. Three fun filled days with no nap for Wyatt, not my first choice, but we survived. Thursday was spent at Legoland. Wyatt was able to see a Thomas the Train and a Bob the Builder made entirely out of legos. We went on all sorts of rides. However, most rides Wyatt was one inch too short for, so we came up with a solution. We put a diaper under his hat so he would be tall enough. It bugged me that they wouldn't let Wyatt ride on our lap, so all 5 of us could ride together. It was fun, but I was disappointed in the lack of cleanliness. I knew it wouldn't be as magical as Disneyland, but it never occurred to anyone to wash off the spiderwebs and keep the over sized Lego blocks clean and shiny. Everything looked faded and old. We were so tired, we took a dip in the hotel pool and then ate dinner at the hotel restaurant, where Byron taught Wyatt the finer points of flirting with the waitress. It must have worked because the waitress gave Wyatt a freshly baked cookie.

Friday we went to the beach, and if I had it my way, we would have spent everyday there. Wyatt loved building sandcastles and splashing in the water. Before we knew it, it was 3:00 in the afternoon. I think Wyatt and I could have stayed there until the sun went down. The salt water must have been in our systems still by dinner time because we were craving sea food, clams to be more specific. Taking the advice of the concierge, we headed to the Fish Market in Del Mar. We stuffed ourselves with clams and scallops, and just when I thought I couldn't fit anymore food into my tummy, I discovered they had creme brulee, my favorite! Needless to say, I'm a diet right now to make up for the weekend.

Saturday we decided to go to the San Diego Zoo, which I'm glad we did, because Wyatt loved it. I think his favorite animals were the elephants and the hippos, probably because they were the biggest to see! He was able to get so close to the hippo, and would get so disappointed when it would swim away. We bought him his own little hippo ("hippopatinus" as Wyatt says) to have all to himself. We ended the day with a train ride on the Balboa Park train and a picnic dinner of chicken and potato salad on La Jolla Beach at sunset. Byron was able to get some great pictures of Wyatt and we even got some nice family pictures with the sunset in the background.

I was sad to go home on Sunday. I didn't feel rested at all, and I knew another visit to the beach would be fun, but all good things must come to an end! Enjoy the pictures, there will be more!

Who Is Visiting Today?
